That is probably because the volume control enforces frequent wake-ups of PA and a low buffer size - and that do for some reason make your audio applications work. If the applications uses PA correctly then it is probably a ALSA driver issue. (I have seen a similar issue with the OSS emulation in PA.) /Mads
