There are likely a few things here, the most important of which is
that Karmic/9.10's linux source package lacks the necessary patches to
properly support PulseAudio 0.9.19 optimally. If you understand the
implications of granting RT priority manually (e.g., via PAM) to PA,
you'll get noticeably better performance.
