The latter is the default. When distributions package the upcoming PA 0.9.16 they should replace the gdbm dependency by a tdb dependency, unless they care about the contents of the state database. Usually this however pretty boring information, so I'd just ignore this issue, and just start anew with the tdb database. That's at least what I will be doing Fedora.
