I have now commited a more sophisticated patch that accomplishes the
same. (c245050)

This will now prefer volume controls with both a mute switch and a
volume slider over those that have only a volume slider over those
which have only a mute switch. This should fix your problem.

Hmm, you said using the switch-only control triggered other volume
handling bugs in PA. Is that true? Looking at the code I am pretty
sure I handle this case correctly and the ALSA sink should still use
the hw mute switch but fall back to software voolume control. And I
cannot spot any bug in that code. Could you please elaborate!
