It is much easier to pull the alsa 19 packages out of the ppa for
ubuntu. Enable the ppa, upgrade alsa, then disable the ppa. That way
you won't get pulse too.

When I did it manually I just built and installed all of the alsa
downloads, it was about six. A couple of the user space apps didn't
build, I just ignored those.
