Damn, that pid problem resurfaced again. The only thing I did differently was that I failed to close audacios before restarting pulseaudio and that 'Failed to write PID file' mesaage is back. On earlier restarts it was working, so it looks like pulseaudio fails to do complete cleanup if it's stopped while sound is playing. Any ideas what should I be looking for ?
