I think this could be releated to permissions problems or perhaps Arts or some other application doing bad things to pulse and locking it up. There is also a lingering problem with something somewhere changing the permissions on /tmp/pulse-$USER to root:root which I've not 100% resolved yet (I thought I had fixed it).
