I know it's not a solution to the actual problem you're reporting, but I
suggest you try "mplayer -ao pulse" instead. Direct output from mplayer to
pulseaudio is a much better option anyway and works very well. (Assuming
your mplayer comes with pulse support compiled in of course ;-))
