Just a quick comment on this: As I told several people from OLPC already, I am not sure if PA is ready for the XO yet. Because we don't close the audio device on idle PA will shorten your battery time immensly. Also, we require FP for our calculations due to our reliance on libsamplerate for resampling. Due to the slow FPU in the XO this might be a problem as well. Also, to be really useful PA should be able to change the fragsize dynamically during playback, so that we can use large frags to save power but use smaller frags when low-latency applications are running. Unfortunately ALSA cannot do this as of now. Next week I will visit Takashi Iwai from ALSA to discuss with him which could be done to make PA more useful for embedded/slow/low-power machines. In short: right now I would not recommend running PA on the XO. We're working on this, though.
