Have you checked which version of ALSA you have installed? The pulse plugin for ALSA was added in 1.0.12. You can do an 'apt-cache policy alsa-base' to see what version of ALSA you have installed. If you do have .12 or newer, then something isn't working right with the plugin. If you're using the asoundrc listed in the wiki, try 'aplay -D pulse /usr/share/sounds/startup3.wav' and see what you get. (aplay is part of the alsa-utils package, and the startup3.wav is in gnome-audio.
