Username containing @

Is there any reason why an email address can't be used as a username when registering with my voip server using pjsip?

This is the type of error I get,

 17:04:55.937 sip_reg.c Invalid Contact: "<sip:brad at gmail.com@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:5060>"
17:04:55.941 pjsua_acc.c Client registration initialization error: Invalid URI (PJSIP_EINVALIDURI) [status=171039]

I have tried escaping the @ in my email addess 3 different ways including %40, but it keeps getting converted back to @ by pjsip during the registration process.
