how about adding this line:
$client->setOpt('curl',CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST,0);

you can see other options at
http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.curl-setopt.php

Thanks for the reply.  I tried that out and the result follows:

curl_exec error 51 SSL: certificate subject name
'www.digitalwell.washington.edu' does not match target host name
'digitalwell.washington.edu'

I assume that this means that the administrators of the servics have made
errors in the creation of their CA cert.  I guess I should talk to them.
Is there any other option for me to follow up with?
