As I know PostNuke use ADO connection. Are the normal Mysql php function faster than the ADO variant? How big is the difference?

A second machine with Firebird database on ( Linux ), and keep Apache/PHP on the first machine. It will be 5-6 times faster, so you may still need to speed up on or other machine depending on where the bottleneck is.
