You have to do:

foreach ($test as $group) {
    if (strtolower ($group) != $sort) {
        $lgroup = strtolower ($group);
        echo "<a href=\"patterns.php?sort={$lgroup}\">{$group}</a><br />";
    } else {
        echo "{$group}<BR><BR>";
        ... query db and show results ...
        echo "<BR>";
    }
}
