Newbie - PHP to MySQL problem communicating a /n

[user@domain.invalid]

I am struggling getting php to send text with newline '/n' in.

I have had a look at the queries that MySQL Control centre sends and 
they seem to have /n inline in the text. But when I build a similar 
query I don't get a newline I just get /n.
