This is easily achieved using session variables. On each page, use session_start() to open up any current variables. In portfolio.php, check the $_SESSION['logged_in_time'] variable. If this is not set, or has expired, then store the current request URL in a new session variable called 'redirect' and transfer the user to the login page. Once the user has successfully logged in, read the 'redirect' session variable and transfer them back to that page. Using a single 'index.php' to transfer all requests around your site makes it much easier to implement security and navigation, as you only need to change the code in one place.
