Hi, Portal means a one point location that provides multiple services, which could include Web searching capability, news, free-email, discussion groups, online shopping, references and other services etc. www.yahoo.com is the perfect example of a portal. If you want to get started on a portal first of all make a list of info that you want to provide on the site. Suppose if it is a cinema portal, you might want provide info of cinema theatre schedules, online tickets, music and video reviews, photo galleries and wallpapers, star interviews etc. For a portal, index page is the main page to focus on, you should include links to all subsections from this page. So you have to plan the interface accordingly. For portals, main index page layout is entirely different from individual sections index pages. Plus, this is different from content pages. I suggest you (programmer) should sit with a designer in preparing the site. Then comes the data control part. For this you have to develop a control panel, probably hidden from public view. This panel is handled by one Admin who wil sit and add/edit/delete data. Admin controls every part of the site's data. Plus he can appoint some other users to control data. So you have to understand the users levels. Then you have to test the site, and see that there are no bugs. This includes trying to think as a cracker and cracking the site. Finally, dont forget to document every thing.
