I hope a good starting is to define the project itself. For example you need to decide what your software should do (the scope). Once defined the scope you can define the functionalities inside the project and then build a WBS. After that, you can build the uses cases and from them to build the software architecture. When defining the architecture, you have to warry about the language and tecnologies because they impact in the software development.
