I'd convert this to a class, if it's not already. You can then do something
like :-
$db = new MyDatabase();
$db->connect(...connection params...);
$db->prepare("myquery1",$paramsArray);
$db->execute();
$db->prepare("myquery2",$paramsArray);
$db->execute();
$db->prepare("myquery3",$paramsArray);
$db->execute();
$db->close();
In the 'execute' method, you could check to see if '$this->connected ===
true', and if not, you could either fail or try and connect using default
parameters.
You can also do something similar to this using procedural programming and
global variables instead.
