At some point, you must be using JavaScript to trigger the AJAX call and page load. I would use the onreadystatechange point to trigger a scan of the DOM and change the AJAX loaded elements at that point. To be honest, if you're going to go to these lengths, it would seem easier to change the backend to output a 'class' tag instead, but without knowing the detail of the application, it's difficult to give a balanced opinion.
