Oh well thats no fun. Ok so it is compiled in which is good. /usr/bin/php php.php runs fine? but php php.php does not? Type at the command like echo $PATH and verify that /usr/bin is located in there for the user you are logged in as. This is starting to sound more like a pathing problem since you can get it to run, just not in a nice way. Also give php -f php.php a shot.
