...has anyone tried phpserv - http://daniel.lorch.cc/projects/phpserv/

I'm working on a project in which I'd like to spawn jobs triggered from a
web browser off to a separate process (the jobs could be very long, so I
don't want to risk someone closing their browser). I could use cron, but the
geek in me likes the idea of a persistent application service receiving
requests via SOAP or XML-RPC. But I'm not especially good at C or Java, and
in any case I'd like to reuse my PHP classes with this service.
