Thank you for the link, and yes that's actually an issue I've dealt with for PHP 7.3.X.
This time around, with PHP 7.4.X I can't even get that far...it simply refuses to connect,
seemingly no matter what I do.
Just for documentation, the exact error is: mysqli_real_connect(): (HY000/2006): MySQL server has gone away
For now I'll just give it a break, hopefully post-release there will be more information available
about this kind of problem. :)

P.S. Just FYI I tried all sorts goofy things just for fun, connecting via TCP/IP, mysql_native_authentication, etc.
No luck. :(
