Either way, asking for a "Sample" is not the best way to determine a coders capabilities. Anyone including a three year old could copy and paste anything and claim it as their own. When it comes to contracting a coder it is probably best to ask them for a portfolio and/or references. If you want to hire them instead as an employee then maybe you could have a competent coder interview them.
