PEAR's mail package does support authentication.
http://email.about.com/od/emailprogrammingtips/qt/PHP_Email_SMTP_Authentication.htm

In case you get a "Sent Successfully" message (but didn't get a mail
in your inbox or spam folder) there is a problem with your SMTP server
configuration. And
