fgetcsv is very useful, here a example:

$row = 1;

/* load file*/
$handle = fopen("log.csv", "r");

/* read line by line */
while (($data = fgetcsv($handle, 1000, ",")) !== FALSE) {
    $num = count($data);
    echo "<p> $num fields in line $row: <br /></p>\n";
