In my 40 plus years of programming I don't think I have ever deliberately typed a back
tick, and had forgotten that it was on the keyboard. And I have tinkered with all sorts of
strange systems, but I have had very little to do with UNIX.

This discussion reminds me of the "Any" key as in: 

Support person "now press any key". User "but there isn't an "Any" key on my keyboard!
