it's a string ... used as the (associative) key to an array. the item you mention probably contains an id or number (because '#' is sometimes used to mean that), try this: var_dump($arr['N']['#']); '#' is just a string, it could be anything: 'A', 'B', 'my_array_key', 'even a complete sentence', these are all valid associative array keys.
