What's your ld.so.conf pointing to for MySQL? It should be pointing to:

    /usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql

And not:

    /usr/local/mysql/lib

Presuming that /usr/local/mysql/ contains the following directories as
expected:

    bin/  include/  info/  lib/  libexec/  man/  mysql-test/
    share/  sql-bench/
