By now you almost made me an expert :) and the above should actually say:

<IfModule mod_dir.c>
     <IfModule mod_php5.c>
         DirectoryIndex index.php index.php3 index.html index.htm
     </IfModule>
     <IfModule !mod_php5.c>
         DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm
     </IfModule>
 </IfModule>
