If you are a company (at least in the UK) and your website does not meet accessibility guidelines you can be reprimanded. Table based layouts are one of the best ways to make non-accessible websites. Sticking to proper semantic and styling via CSS is one of the best ways to ensure your website /is/ accessible. So while tables may be forwards compatible in how your website looks to a visual renderer, that's not the only target....
