While I've not looked into it myself, I'd imagine it is just a VCALENDAR attachment with the correct (or perhaps M$ bastardised) MIME type. If you have an IMAP server you can use, send the mail to Outlook and drag the message to the IMAP server then use the shell or e.g. Thunderbird to look at the Message Source that Outlook inexplicably keeps so secret and guarded from you!!
