I use: 1) my vast (literally hundreds) of working examples created from dozens of my php, mysql, ajax, html, and javascript books; 2) online resources; 3) and hundreds of various common functions stored in my notes application Yojimbo.
From there, it's a matter of assembling the right routines to solve the problem at hand.
It's kind of a "learned the hard way" perspective to design patterns. I'm one of those types that think nothing is impossible with the right money and enough time.
