Are you sure you searched on this subject?

"maximum url length" in Google turns up a number of resources saying
"2083" due to IE's limit.

Google can be wrong, as it is now.

IE 5.2 for the Mac running on Mac OS-X 10.4.2 will accept/pass 8168 characteries.
