Probably reporting a bug report at http://bugs.php.net/, i did a quick search but didn't see any open related to this but you might want to search a little harder than I did. Be sure to include the OS, filesystem type and the configure line in the report, cause there seems to be something system dependent causing it since the script you posted earlier worked fine on my system.
