SESSION expiry time setting

Hi guys.

I've been searching for where the time is set for a session to expire 
but had little luck.

in the PHP.ini file I found:

session.cache_expire

which specifies the time in minutes but is this what sets the session to 
timeout once the setting time has been surpassed?

Or am I looking in the totally wrong direction??
