The alternative syntax, as far as I know, is to maintain compatibility
with PHP/FI (aka PHP 2) from waaaaaaaaay back in time.

I don't think anybody really uses it any more, but it's easier to leave it
alone then to rip it out.

I seriously doubt there is any measurable performance difference in any
real-world scenario.
