That is because you changed the environment on which it was working.
The problem is always with people, not with software. Some people feel that they need to ride the latest wave and always upgrade to the latest versions as soon as they are released. The reality is that new versions have new bugs and there is no guaranteed that new bugs are not worse than the bugs in old versions.
The point is that if you do not need to use the latest version, just stick to the one you have and works for you. It will probably take 1 year or so for PHP 5 to be as bug free as the current PHP 4, so my advice is to not upgrade unless you really need something fundamental only provided by PHP 5.
