I agree with you. I don't know much about art movements but Mortenses was also walking a fine line with his relationship to his students. I don't have a problem with that but many people did. Some may still. I used to have a bunch of his books. Unfortunately none of the "pricey" ones. I sold them on eBay but before doing so I copied all the illustrations so now I have set of 30 or so of some of his not-so-grotesque work.
He was indeed unappreciated and unrecognized. Probably for the better based on his work! If he had not anything to prove he maybe would not have accomplished what he did. Once I brought a collection of his prints belonging to the Photographic Society of America to my school.
