So comparing a sensor to second sensor with twice the area;
The larger sensor would have to have to have twice the number of pixels to have the same resolving power as the smaller sensor.  The captured image of the larger sensor would have a larger field of view i.e. ./more items in the captured image.
 
The larger sensor would have to have more than twice the pixels (higher pixel density) to have more resolving power.
