As far as gun control is concerned, the genie is out of the bottle.  Go to your local newsstand or Barnes and Noble bookstore and look at a copy of Firearms News.

People control is another issue.  It may be an insoluble problem.  When I was a kid in NY in the mid 1950s, gangs would make .22 cal. zip guns out of car radio antennas, clothespin springs, pieces of wood and lots of friction tape.  One shot at a time, but very lethal. 

Not to scare you too much. but with a small lathe, a drill press and a few hand tools, any competent machinist can make an ordinary self-loading rifle or pistol into a fully automatic weapon.  Now, the tools aren't illegal, and the knowledge isn't illegal, but the person who uses both to make an unlicensed automatic firearm is a criminal.

For those of you who have a engineering bent and a sense of humor, a firearm may be considered a special case of an internal combustion engine....
