Who will drive the wagon train with the 250 lurkers? The important thing to note (if you are a lurker) is that all of us want to change our images one more time 10 seconds after the deadline, we all wonder what the world will think of our stuff, and we all have self-doubts. Even if we were to get a famous participant whose name (Ansel and Ed come to mind) and image would guarantee the book being on somebody’s best seller list, we all fear that it might make our entry look like rubbish. In 2003, I entered a shot called Bass Rock and while I still think it is among the 10 best shots I have ever taken, as it does not fly off the shelf, I have my doubts. It was however, very popular with the iPhone camera crowd in a show in 2012, where the docent thought as many as 250 folks ‘copied’ it. They did not understand that taking a selfie of the artist’s art is not helping the artist make more art. I sat in a corner in a daze for my opening, occasionally wondering if I could have an Uzi in my lap with which to really shoot the copyist crowd. I had my getaway driver at the ready, but getting me into the front seat was an issue. So have I taken a better image in the interim than my entry in 2003? I hope so, although my shooting was squashed flat by anesthesia for several years. In 2008, I shot 385 rolls of Reala 120. In 2012, I only shot 6. It has been a tough climb out of the cobwebs, but as I can imagine again, so I can also shoot. Noblex Oblige
