This hasn't really changed in 20 years. My friend chris watts working with Kodak on the Cineon computer graphics system did whay is call a Full DI (digital intermediate) on Pleasantville. Obviously this can be done with mattes and filters and controlled processing in very much the same way when priting from camera neg to interpositive to interneg to final projection print positive. Not even the first by 80 years all the glowing tron uniforms in the 1980s where done with hand painted lithos from film shot with the chemical post process in mind.
