Yes, I have the same problem with LR3 sometimes - usually when I've been working for a long time without restarting the computer.  I'm on a PC but I do the same thing and go to Task Manager and force the application to quit.  Then I can reopen it.  Restarting the computer also works.

I have no idea why it does that but, so far, I haven't had the problem with the LR4 beta (fingers crossed)
