Actually, there are small round bubble levels that are perfect for carrying
along. I recently bought a cheap Chinese "hot shoe cover" that has a bubble
level built in, but I carried one like this for a long time. The hot shoe is
a nice flat place, just set it on there:

And, the hot shoe cover one is so tiny, you really cannot see if you are truly
level. But the little 1" Home Depot bubble level is perfect.
