Marilyn,
Sometimes scanners have a locking mechanism to keep the scan head in place while moving it around. If that is not unlocked it can cause the kind of lines you are talking about. There is usually a lock symbol somewhere on the scanner if in fact it has one. It could also be caused by the scan head traveling unevenly because the gears are not meshed properly. Listen to see if the scan head sounds like it is moving smoothly as it travels. Hope that is useful, Lincoln Lincoln Turner

My scanner is not working properly and I’m not sure how to correct my problem. When I scan a photograph, zig-zag lines of color (mostly red, green and blue) are visible on the scan. These lines are not on the photograph being scanned. Do I need to adjust
the scanner in some way (a HP Photosmart C6180), or is it time for a new scanner? This happens no matter what the type of paper the photograph is on, or the paper’s finish. The photographs were taken on film.
