These are not autochromes.  They are much, much better than autochromes. 
They were shot as separation negatives (you can see the effects of the
time delay in water, sometimes in clouds or foliage if there's enough
breeze).

He originally showed them to people using a custom slide projector with
color filters.

The negatives reside at the Library of Congress, and they have both
restored versions of many of the photos, and the original scans of many of
the photos, on their website and available for download, so you can play
