Art was the province of the Roman Catholic Church and Galileo was a scientist. I wouldn't say art and science coexisted in Galileo case. Leonardo da Vinci -was both an artist and a scientist who wrote a lot of stuff so it could only be read if you had a mirror. I think your generalization does hold up as a universal truth.
