Practical mechanics and other artisans often delight in producing objects of art from scrap materials - a park local to me has a dinosaur built from scrap bicycle parts which I am told is a full scale model.
 
Albert Schweitzer achieved fame as an organist as well as being an eminent scientist.
 
 
It is true that centuries ago there were polymaths whose talents embraced science, art, and letters but as each discipline has expanded and specialisation within it has intensified it has become harder for anyone to have a deep understanding of even one discipline.
