Well one other idea to think about Lea. Unless someone is comfortable and relaxed in the outdoors, they won't be that willing to venture too far into the outdoors. IF your friend doesn't have the basic skills needed to make a night in the wild comfortable (things like how to build emergency shelters, fires, gear ect) and stay relaxed and confident, then they really won't be too likely to venture off the beaten paths. As long as you stay on the beaten path, you won't really know what you missed.
A book or magazine with these types of skills might be as helpful as a photography mag, IF their outdoor experience is limited. IF they have been say a lifelong hunter, this wouldn't be the way to go.

I'm wanting to give a friend a subscription to an outdoor photography magazine.
Can someone recommend a good one?
Thanks.
